The Bam branch of SPASDI

Since the disastrous earthquake on 26th December 2003, SPASDI has been actively present in Bam. Following its initial recovery services in the first two months after the earthquake (including cash and food supply, helping victims settle in tents, providing expeditionary physicians, social workers, and voluntarily forces to give rehabilitation and psychological assistance to victims), a branch was set up in Bam to continue with mid- and long-term support.

One major activity was to equip the first non-governmental rehabilitation centre for victims of the earthquake.  Another major strategy was to equip, organize and hold vocational skills classes for female heads of families, orphans and individuals with disabilities.  Many families and individuals have recovered and have been able to become self-sufficient with SPASDI's support.

SPASDI continues to provide its vocational training to those in need. Computer training is one of the main classes that is regularly attended, along with sewing and dress-making workshops.

A nursery for needy children also continues to function, with rehabilitation and medical facilities for those in need. A recreational trip was organized for 31 trainees and children in 2009.

The SPASDI center in Bam is located in the middle of a date producing orchard, supporting small farmer families. For the first time, part of the produced dates were exported to Switzerland and were sold in Dec 2009, the income of which will support the activities of the Bam branch.
